SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team fell to Millersville on Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup, 93-83, at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (5-8, 2-6 PSAC) had four players reach double figures. Junior
Kyle Whippen and redshirt-junior
Ty Crespo led the Raiders with 17 points each. Whippen shot 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line to score his most points as a Raider and finished just four points off his career high; he added five rebounds and two assists to his totals. Crespo reached a new career high with three steals and provided three assists on the day.
Markus Frank was close behind with 16 points. Junior
Satchel Ball reached the double-digit mark with 11 points. Sophomores
Trey Martin and
Timmy Conner each had seven points for the Raiders.
Millersville (10-3, 5-2) shot 56.1 percent from the field compared to Shippensburg's 45.0 percentage. The Marauders cleaned the glass, out-rebounding the Raiders 47-25. Sixteen offensive rebounds for Millersville led to 15 second-chance points, and the Marauders scored 52 points in the paint.
Only four points separated the teams through the first half as Shippensburg took a 39-35 lead into halftime, but the Raiders could not overcome a big 58-point second half for Millersville.
Neither team held more than a two-possession lead through the first 11 minutes until a 7-0 run by the Marauders gave them the biggest lead of half at 29-19.
Down nine points in the final five minutes, threes by Frank and Conner cut the deficit to three points. Consecutive baskets by Whippen and Ball put the Raiders in front 33-32. Millersville ended SU's 10-0 run with a free throw, but the Raiders scored the next six points to help finish the half on a 16-3 overall run in the final five minutes.
Millersville quickly tied the score at 39-39 with the first two baskets of the second half. A big three from the Marauders with 15:17 remaining gave the Marauders a small lead. Ahead 75-69 with 5:06 remaining, the Marauders scored consecutive baskets to take their first double-digit lead of the half.
The visitors were 9-of-9 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 6:19 of play to close out the game and shot 60 percent from the field overall in the second half.
Matt Dade led all scorers with 25 points for the Marauders. Jaden Faulkner also reached the 20-point mark and Jahme Ested added 16 points. Faulkner finished two assists shy of a triple-double, totaling 11 rebounds and eight assists.
SU travels to Kutztown on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tipoff at Keystone Arena.
