The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team rebounded in resounding fashion Sunday with a 6-1 victory at No. 6 Assumption to cap off its weekend in the northeast.
Â
Shippensburg (3-1) peppered Assumption (1-3) with shots early and often, posting a 23-3 margin in shots on goal and a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners. Â
Â
The Raiders unleashed offensive fury from the onset of the first quarter, firing 11 shots on goal and recording seven penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes. By halftime, SU had already recorded 15 shots on goal and forced Greyhound goalkeeper Paige Gillette to make 11 saves.
Â
Sophomores
Taryn Mayer and
Agus Garibaldi each scored twice for Shippensburg, as four different Raiders found the back of the net in the contest.
Â
SU scored twice in each of the first two quarters. Both Raider goals in the first quarter came on penalty corners, with Mayer ripping a reverse hit for the opening goal and junior
Yasmin De Meyer also finding success with a reverse hit from deep in the circle.
Â
Garibaldi deposited her third goal of the season with a second-quarter strike from atop the circle after the ball was sent into the circle and off a defender by junior
Tess Jedeloo. SU made it 4-1 at halftime when Mayer took possession near the end line, dribbled through multiple defenders, and ripped a shot low on the near side for her second goal of the match.
Â
After a scoreless third quarter, junior
Valu Paul scored her first goal of the year by slamming home a centering feed from senior
Chloe Prettyman. Later in the fourth, Garibaldi nabbed her second goal of the game by creating space at the top of the circle off a penalty corner insert from freshman
Hannah White.
Â
Junior
Lindsay Tripodo made her first start of the season in goal for the Raiders and made one save. Senior
Paige Graber was credited with a defensive save. Gillette finished with 16 saves for the Greyhounds.
