QUAKERTOWN, Pa. — The Shippensburg University softball team defeated the No. 1 in the West, Seton Hill, in a whirlwind comeback in the seventh inning as the Raiders advanced in the winner's bracket of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Softball Tournament. The Raiders defeated the Griffins, 15-10 on a Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Park.
Â
Shippensburg (29-18) got off to a terrific start, taking a 6-0 lead through two innings. The Raiders scored four runs in the first before recording an out, taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch before a two-run home run by junior
Morgan Lindsay.
Â
In the top of the second, a two-out single by junior
Taylor Myers prefaced a two-run home run by freshman
Caitlyn Martell that gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead.
Â
Seton Hill countered with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the second inning before scoring six unearned runs in the third inning to take an 8-6 lead.
Â
The Raiders got one back in the top of the fifth with a two-out, solo home run by Lindsay – her second long ball of the game – which hit off the scoreboard in right-center field. Sophomore
Ally Weaver tied it in the top of the sixth with a clutch RBI-double to left-center field that glanced off the glove of diving center fielder Bre Athey. Â
Â
The Griffins countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Nina Grandey led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Camryn Murphy.
Â
The top of the seventh inning proved magical for the Raiders against the Griffins, It began with a line-drive solo home run by Martell to left-center that tied the game, 9-9. Graduate
Hannah Marsteller drew a walk and Lindsay bombed another home run to right center for her third home run of the game and her fourth of the day.
Â
Lindsay's three home runs in a game ties Masteller's three home runs from last year's Game 2 against Holy Family and are the most in a PSAC Tournament game ever by a Raider.
Â
The Raiders continued the hitting momentum as junior
Alyssa Nehlen singled to second base. With two outs, freshman
Rilee Ehrlacher worked the pitcher and got to a full count and singled to left field to have two runners on base. Weaver again came in clutch with a hit by pitch and loaded the bases. During Myers' at bat, the Raiders scored two runs off two wild pitches to extend the lead to 13-9. Myers then drew the walk and Martell brought Weaver home with an RBI single up the middle. Marsteller followed it up with an RBI single to right field for a 15-9 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Seton Hill scored one run with a solo home run by Brooke Cleland. The Griffins drew a walk and a double to right field to have two runners on base. Â
Â
Freshman
Kaira Zamadics came in as the relief pitcher and got three consecutive outs with a strikeout looking, a pop up to third baseman freshman
Emilee Sullivan and the third final out with a groundout to Sullivan.
Â
The Raiders will face Slippery Rock tomorrow at 10 a.m. The Rock defeated No. 2 seed in the East, East Stroudsburg, 11-10.
