Gallery: (4-8-2023) 2023 Softball vs. Kutztown (DH)
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team could not hold on to an early Game 2 lead and settled for a split with Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Robb Field. The Raiders won Game 1, 11-5, before falling to Kutztown in Game 2, 6-3.
Shippensburg (16-11, 10-6 PSAC East) and Kutztown (14-16, 8-6) combined for 43 hits. Junior
Morgan Lindsay was 5-for-7 with six RBIs while graduate
Hannah Marsteller reached base four times and scored three runs.
Freshman
Caitlyn Martell, who finished yesterday's doubleheader at Mansfield with hits in seven consecutive at-bats, began Saturday's doubleheader with two more hits – giving her a school record for consecutive at-bats with a hit (nine). Martell finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored.
Shippensburg hits the road next week for three doubleheaders away from Robb Field, beginning Tuesday at Shepherd.
Game 1: Shippensburg 11, Kutztown 5
Both teams came out swinging in Game 1 and were tied 3-3 after the first inning before Martell doubled to right center in the second, putting herself in scoring position for Marsteller to hit a single, sending Martell home to gain the lead.
From there, all momentum was on the Raiders side. In a five-run fourth inning, Lindsay hit a two-run single and both junior
Alyssa Nehlen and sophomore
Katelyn Minney hit RBI-singles. Martell slammed a two-run homer in the fifth – her third home run of the season.
All but one Raider had at least one hit in Game 1. Lindsay led the Raiders, going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a three-run homer in the first inning, and totaled five RBIs. Martell also went 3-for-4 and tallied two RBIs.
Freshman
Kaira Zamadics entered the circle in relief of junior
Maelynn Leber in the first inning and ended up finishing it out for her third win of the year. Zamadics allowed two runs in 6.1 innings and struck out two.
Game 2: Kutztown 6, Shippensburg 3
Shippensburg took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 with four singles, including RBIs from Lindsay and Nehlen, but Kutztown quickly answered by scoring five runs in a decisive second inning. The Raiders only other run of the game came from a Marsteller solo home run in the third inning.
Junior
Taylor Myers was 2-for-3 in Game 2 and finished the doubleheader with four hits and three runs scored.
Sophomore
Alicia Ball and junior
Emma Flattery combined to pitch the first four innings. Redshirt-senior
Maddie Uschock pitched three scoreless innings of relief and struck out two.
