RECAP: Baseball walks-off Game 2 in doubleheader split with Le Moyne

Baal launched a pair of home runs late in Game 2


SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team opened a non-conference doubleheader with a loss against Le Moyne on Saturday, 9-5, before picking up a walk-off victory in extra innings in Game 2, 12-11, at Fairchild Field.
 
Shippensburg (10-5) notched 26 hits across two games, including a walk-off single in Game 2 from junior Morgan Wyatt, while the Raider pitching staff totaled 22 strikeouts.
 
Le Moyne (5-5) pulled away late in Game 1, scoring five runs in the fifth inning to earn the victory.
 
Shippensburg will return to Fairchild Field on Sunday against Le Moyne for a pair of seven-inning games beginning at noon.
 
Game 1: Le Moyne 9, Shippensburg 5
 
The Dolphins opened up the scoring in third inning with a three-run shot over the centerfield wall by Andrew Roden.
 
Junior Andrew Chronister helped put the Raiders on the board in the bottom of the third with his third sacrifice fly of the season, allowing freshman Mike Heckman to score.
 
A solo homer from Lukas Egenhauser in the fourth brought the Dolphins lead back to three runs.
 
Le Moyne pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring five runs off a myriad of walks and hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded.
 
The Raiders were able to tack on four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore Gio Calamia.
 
Graduate Noah Nabholz got the start on the mound for SU, pitching 4.1 innings and punching out five batters.
 
Game 2: Shippensburg 12, Le Moyne 11
 
Le Moyne's Wyatt Patchett notched the first runs of Game 2, blasting a three-run home run over the left field wall in the first inning.
 
Roden sent his second home run of the day to left field in the second frame to extend the Dolphins lead to 4-0.
 
The Raiders entered the bottom of the sixth trailing 6-1. Graduate Justin Byler lined his third hit of the game to right center field, bringing in a run from second.
 
Shippensburg posted an additional pair of runs on the board, including a fielder's choice to score Wyatt and an RBI single from redshirt-sophomore Brock Piper to cut Le Moyne's lead to 6-4.
 
Roden hit a two-RBI single in the seventh to pull the Dolphins ahead by four. Patchett followed suit with a single of his own to bring home another run.
 
Junior Austin Baal pulled the Raiders within two runs, launching a three-run shot to over the right field fence.
 
SU entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 11-7. Baal crushed his PSAC-leading sixth home run to right field on the first pitch.
 
Wyatt recorded his second career triple before Byler knocked his fourth hit of the game to bring home a run.
 
Sophomore Jaxon Dalena blasted a two-run shot 400 feet to straightaway centerfield to tie the game, 11-11.
 
In the bottom of the tenth inning, Chronister laid down a bunt to move Calamia into scoring position. An intentional walk to Baal brought Wyatt to the plate with one out. On a 2-1 count, Wyatt lined one past the third baseman to bring Calamia home, securing the 12-11 victory.
 
Junior Gabe Stotler started the game for Shippensburg, pitching three innings and striking out three.
 
Junior Austen LaBarre earned his first win of the season, registering four strikeouts in three innings.
 
Byler finished the day going 5-for 8 with 2 RBIs.
 
Baal recorded four RBIs on two home runs with four total hits on Saturday.
