SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team found run-scoring opportunities few and far between in a loss to the No. 11 East Stroudsburg Warriors Sunday at Fairchild Field, 6-2.
Â
Shippensburg (16-12, 4-5 PSAC) was held to just five hits and struck out a total of 13 times against Warrior pitching. Redshirt-sophomore
Brock Piper smashed his second home run of the season, and graduate
Justin Byler – who has at least one hit in 10 out of his last 11 contests – led the Raiders with a pair of hits.
Â
East Stroudsburg (21-4, 5-1) right-hander Tom Reisinger baffled opposing hitters through 5.2 innings with a wicked 12-6 breaking ball, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out eight to pick up the victory. Nick McAuliffe fanned five in 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
Â
Piper turned on an inside fastball from Reisinger and lined a screamer over the left field wall for a solo shot to give the Raiders a quick one-run lead after two.
Â
ESU responded with runs in each of the next four at bats to take a 5-2 lead midway through the sixth before Piper stepped to the plate with a chance to do more damage in the bottom of the frame.
Â
With two outs and the bases juiced, Piper came through with a sharp line drive up the middle. The liner was knocked down by McAuliffe on the mound, who had just entered for Reisinger, robbing Piper of a hit and ending the SU threat.
Â
Five straight SU hitters reached base during the sixth-inning rally. Sophomore
Gio Calamia reached on an ESU error and later scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-2 game, but that was as close as the Raiders would get.
Â
Redshirt-freshman
Eric Bohenek walked five in four innings but allowed just three runs on two hits. Junior
Jackson LoBianco rescued a beleaguered bullpen, surrendering three runs (two earned) in five innings of relief.
Â
A leadoff walk issued by Bohenek came around to score without a hit to tie the score in the third. A two-out, two-run single from Mike Kelly put the Warriors in front midway through the fourth, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth gave the visitors a three-run cushion.
Â
ESU tacked on an unearned run off LoBianco in the top of the sixth, right before the Raiders last big threat.
Â
Kelly singled home the Warriors' final run in the eighth, giving him a total of four RBIs.
Â
Up next, the Raiders hit the road for a midweek nonconference dustup against the Frostburg State Bobcats Tuesday at 3 p.m.
