YORK, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team completed the first day of the 2023 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships in sixth place. Action is taking place at the Graham Aquatic Center.
The lone finalist for the men on the opening day of competition was graduate
Andrew Hale, who placed 12th overall in the 200-yard IM by finishing fourth in the consolation final. Hale, the school-record holder in the event (1:52.30 in 2022), swam 1:53.93 in the evening final after qualifying in 1:53.42.
It is the fifth career PSAC place-winning performance in the event for Hale, who finished 12th last year, third in 2021, eighth in 2020, and seventh in 2019.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore
David Johnson turned in a time of 9:55.50, just nine-tenths of a second off his previous collegiate best. Johnson's time from the morning timed finals session held up for a 16th-place finish that contributed a point toward the team score.
Redshirt-junior
JC Greenwood went out strong in his swim in the 1,000-yard freestyle and concluded with a time of 10:02.87, while senior
David Bussard narrowly missed his PR in the event after swimming 10:15.33.
Senior
Elijah Zinn paced the Raiders in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.67 seconds. Seniors
Tylor Yakaitis (22.33 seconds) and
Alec Burger (22.45 seconds) delivered PRs.
The 800-yard freestyle relay of Johnson, Greenwood, sophomore
Zaidian Van Orden and sophomore
Nathan VanNatter ended Day 1 with a sixth-place time of 7:01.53.
Day begins at 10 a.m. Thursday with prelims.
