SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split a thrilling doubleheader against Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon, winning 9-8 in extra innings in Game 1 before falling in Game 2, 6-3, at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (2-2) totaled 20 hits in the doubleheader. Junior
Morgan Lindsay had a career-high four hits in Game 1, including the two-run single to tie the game in the 8th inning, and the walkoff hit in the 10th inning. She finished the day with six hits and four RBIs.
Graduate
Hannah Marsteller hit a grand-slam home run in Game 1 to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead. She ended the day with three hits, four RBIs and two walks.
In Game 2, Fairmont State (2-2) scored in the first inning and capitalized on the lead. SU and FSU did have to stop after the fifth inning due to lack of light.
Senior
Emma Flattery came in as relief pitcher in Game 1 and got the win; she did not allow the Fighting Falcons to get a hit in 2.1 innings pitched.
Shippensburg will be travel to Coker University for a tri-match weekend on February 24 and 25. The Raiders will face Adelphi at 10 a.m. and Coker at 3 p.m. on both days.
Game 1: Shippensburg 9, Fairmont State 8 (10 innings)
Marsteller got the Raiders on the board early in the game, with a grand slam home run to left center in the bottom of the second. The Raiders kept the momentum going, as Lindsay doubled to left field, and freshman Caitlin Martell got on base on a single to left field. Junior
Alyssa Nehlen ripped a double down the left field line to give the Raiders a 6-0 lead. All six runs in the inning were scored with two outs.
Fairmont State was relentless and scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning, and one more in the fifth inning to tie the game, 6-6.
In the top of the eighth inning with the international tiebreaker in effect, the Fighting Falcons scored two runs off a double by Peyton Wetherholt and Elizabeth Waszkiewicz. SU tied the game with a two-run single up the middle by Lindsay to take us to the ninth and then into the tenth inning.
In the bottom of the tenth, junior
Taylor Myers reached base on a fielder's choice and Marsteller walked. Lindsay ripped a single to left center and brought home Myers for the victory.
Sophomore
Alicia Ball started in the circle for the Raiders and threw 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out one. Redshirt-Senior
Maddie Uschock threw 0.1 inning and allowed one hit.
Coming off an injury from the past two years, senior
Hanna Phillips returned to the circle and helped hold Fairmont State; she threw 4.0 innings and allowed five hits and had a career-high five strikeouts.
Game 2: Fairmont State 6, Shippensburg 3 (5 innings)
Fairmont State struck first with a three-run home run by Abbie Keilholz to center field. The Raiders answered back with a two-run home run by Lindsay to left center.
The Fighting Falcons extended their lead with a two-run triple by Emily Riggs. Martell hit a single to second to bring one run home to keep the game close in the fourth inning, but Fairmont State scored another run in the top of the fifth inning and the Raiders were unable to answer in the bottom of the fifth.
The game ended after five innings due to darkness. Per NCAA rules, the game is considered an official contest because the home team completed five innings at bat.
Freshman
Kaira Zamadics started in the circle for the Raiders and faced four batters. Flattery came in as a reliever and threw 1.1 innings and struck out one, while junior
Maelynn Leber threw 3.1 innings and struck out three.
Notes:
- Shippensburg has not played 10 innings at home since April 13, 2016 when SU beat IUP, 6-5.
- Nehlen holds the school record for career hit by pitch, 20.
