RECAP: Men’s Indoor Track and Field completes its weekend in Boston

Raiders pile up personal bests at the Hemery Invitational

2/11/2023 10:14:00 PM

The Shippensburg University men's indoor track and field team wrapped up its weekend in Boston with numerous solid performances and new personal bests on Saturday at the Hemery Valentine Invitational.

The day began with Hayden Hunt delivering a 15-second PR in the 5K, running 14:53.81, and the distance and mid-distance squad continued the momentum by delivering a number of noteworthy efforts.

Ian Sherlock entered the weekend atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaderboard in the 3K and ran a time of 8:37.22, just .23 seconds off his converted season best, yet was passed in the conference rankings by two of his teammates, situating the Raiders 1-2-3 in the event.

Joey Cintavey dazzled in the 3K, running a marvelous time of 8:28.75 – an 11-second personal best upon the converted time of his previous PR. It's the second-fastest time in the conference in the last two years, trailing only teammate Chayce Macknair's time of 8:27.83 at the 2022 Sykes & Sabock Invitational. It is also only the second time in the last five years that a runner from a PSAC school has broken 8:29 in the 3K.

It continues Cintavey's wonderful progression as a runner. His first collegiate indoor 3K ended in a time of 9:32.45 – it was recorded just more than three years ago (Feb. 1, 2020). Cintavey has since improved by 63 seconds.

Garrett Quinan, who entered the day with a converted personal best of 8:45, made his way around the Boston track with a time of 8:36.42 for a nine-second improvement. Drew Dailey improved his mile PR by four seconds, running 4:15.33. His fastest collegiate mile had been his debut effort in 2020, a run of 4:19.18.

One day after his marvelous opening leg on the distance medley relay (DMR), Matt Wehrle completed the 800 in 1:54.69, just off his converted season best in the event, while Chase Hensinger completed the 800 in 1:55.59.

Quinton Townsend had an excellent day and paced the sprinters with two notable personal bests. Townsend became the fourth man in the conference this season to break 22 seconds in the 200 meters, running 21.99 seconds, and led three Raiders in the 400 meters with a time of 49.11 seconds. Both times are huge collegiate bests for the Palmyra native.

James Jaisingh ran 49.30 seconds in the 400 and 22.51 seconds in the 200 – significant personal bests. It was Jaisingh's fourth collegiate indoor 200 and the first time he has broken 23 seconds in the event.

Mason Boyd enhanced his personal best in the 400 to 49.32 seconds, and Teagan Weaver (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) clocked in at 22.38 seconds in the 200 meters to up his PR.

Jaisingh, Weaver, Townsend and Boyd teamed up to run 3:17.03 in the 4x400 meter relay, an NCAA provisional qualifier that gives the Raiders some distance atop the league leaderboard.

Eric Kirk ran the 60 in 7.06 seconds and the 200 in 22.01 seconds.

Shippensburg will send a contingent to compete at the Bucknell Tune-Up next Friday. The PSAC Championships will be held in two weeks at Bucknell.
