RECAP: Women’s Basketball comes up short at No. 17 Cal (Pa.)

George scores 22 points to lead the Raiders; SU led late in the third quarter

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team battled at No. 17-ranked California (Pa.) but came up short, dropping a 67-45 decision to the Vulcans on Monday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at the Convocation Center.

Shippensburg (1-8, 0-3 PSAC) took a one-point lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, rallying from an early 10-point deficit. SU had its most success during the middle 20 minutes of the game, outscoring the hosts 36-31 from the start of the second quarter through the end of the third quarter.

California (8-1, 3-0) led by just two points after three quarters, 45-43, but then held the Raiders without a field goal in the fourth quarter to pull away with a lopsided victory. The bookend quarters proved costly for SU, as the Vulcans outscored the Raiders 36-9 in that span.

Graduate Treasure George led the Raiders with a season-high 22 points, finishing just two points short of her career high. George scored 14 points in the first half and finished the game making four three-pointers and 6-of-9 attempts at the free-throw line. It is her third 20-point game of the season and the fourth of her career.

Senior Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez doubled her previous career high in minutes as a Raider, playing 26 minutes in the post Monday night. Rodriguez Sanchez scored four points, grabbed an SU-high nine rebounds, and recorded three steals.

Junior Abbie Miller finished with seven points but was limited down the stretch due to foul trouble. Fellow junior Taja Colbert finished with six points, three rebounds and matched her career high with four steals. Freshman Bella Chimienti grabbed six rebounds in the first half, finishing one short of her career high.

Cal got a double-double from All-American Dejah Terrell (16 points, 13 rebounds), 14 points from Alicia Young and 13 points from Nina Shaw. Allycia Harris grabbed 11 rebounds. The Vulcans limited the Raiders to 2-of-29 shooting in the bookend quarters to achieve the victory.

Shippensburg returns to action at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at Slippery Rock.
