SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team fell to the Lock Haven Bald Eagles in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest Saturday during Shippensburg University Homecoming weekend at Seth Grove Stadium, 21-7.
Â
The Raiders (2-7, 2-5) got a 65-yard second quarter touchdown reception from junior wide receiver
Redd Douglas and 94 yards on the ground from redshirt-sophomore
Tanner Hess in the loss.
Â
The Bald Eagles (5-5, 3-4) countered with big plays of their own, including a 79-yard TD catch from T-iar Young and a 65-yard TD run from PSAC rushing leader Chris Collier.
Â
All the scoring Saturday occurred in the 15 minutes leading up to halftime. The Bald Eagles struck first with a pair of quick scores.
Â
The Raiders responded on the opening play of the next drive, as Douglas beat his coverage on a deep ball from freshman quarterback
Sam Stoner for a long Shippensburg touchdown.
Â
Douglas finished with 6 catches for 84 total yards.
Â
Another big play, this time a 37-yard reception from Young, set up a Collier 10-yard touchdown reception with 1:29 remaining in the second quarter, resulting in a 21-7 Lock Haven lead at intermission.
Â
Despite the relatively close margin, the Raiders just could not stir up enough momentum on offense to make a game of it in the second half.
Â
The SU defense held the Bald Eagles scoreless after the break. Graduate linebacker
Evan Townsend-Henry paced the unit with 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss. Redshirt-junior linebacker
Ray Jones also reached double-digits in tackles with 10.
Â
Redshirt-sophomore
Terrance Peterson Jr. totaled nine tackles, including four solo, as well as a quarterback sack. Redshirt-senior
Nasir Greer also recorded nine tackles (four solo) and hauled in his second interception of the season during the second half.
Â
Redshirt-freshman
Ibrahim Diawara registered his sixth sack of the season, which is second on the club behind senior
Jacoby Sherard's seven.
Â
Collier finished with 130 yards, giving him 1,223 yards this season. Young, meanwhile, caught two passes for 116 yards.
Â
Lock Haven quarterback Kyle Zajack completed 14-of-25 pass attempts for 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Â
With the victory, Lock Haven broke an 18-game losing streak against the Raiders that dated back to 2003, and it is the Bald Eagles' first win at Shippensburg since 1989.
Â
Next week, Shippensburg will host Gannon for its season finale. Kick-off from Seth Grove Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
