SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team fell to Jefferson, 84-49, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (0-3) was not able to slow down Jefferson (3-0), a 28-win team last season that reached the NCAA Sweet 16. The Rams shot 56 percent from the field and had 25 assists compared to just 10 turnovers.
Off the bench, senior
Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez led the Raiders with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting. Freshman
Alexis Buie scored a career-high eight points in her third game as a Raider, going 3-of-4 from the field.
Jefferson found momentum quickly with the first two baskets of the game and led wire-to-wire. The Rams led 11–2 after the first four minutes and 24–12 after the first quarter. The Raiders had a 5-0 run late in the second quarter, but Jefferson took a 43-21 lead into the half. Both teams were even in the fourth quarter with a 14–14 score.
Graduate
Treasure George had seven points and two assists. Sophomore
Ellie Goodwin had six points and equaled her career high with six rebounds. Junior
Taja Colbert had six points, and freshman
Bella Chimienti (York, Pa./Central York) enhanced her career high to six points.
Jefferson got 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, four steals and three blocks from Haley Meinel, while Cassie Murphy poured in 19 points to complement seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Rams scored 23 points off 17 Raider turnovers.
SU returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Holy Family.
