SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team fell to Bowie State on Saturday night, 61-52 in its second game of its season-opening Conference Challenge at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (0-2) got a game-high 19 points and four assists from junior
Taja Colbert, who was named to the All-Tournament Team. Freshman
Mia Johnson added 10 points of the bench; eight of those points came in the fourth quarter.
Bowie State (1-1) held SU to just three field goals in the first half and 33 percent shooting in the contest while out-rebounding the Raiders by 11. Point guard Anii Harris (14 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals) and forward Beulah Odiong (eight points, 10 rebounds, three steals) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Bulldogs opened on a 6-1 run and never allowed the Raiders to take a lead in the contest. Freshman
Bella Chimienti banked home a three-pointer to bring the Raiders within one possession and junior
Abbie Miller followed with a jumper on the next possession to tie the game at 6-6, but Bowie held a 13-9 lead after one.
Bowie opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 13-point lead. Shippensburg ended a five-minute scoring drought with free throws by Miller, but the Bulldogs continued their momentum and led 31-18 at the half.
It was Shippensburg who opened the second half with the momentum. Two baskets by Colbert, including one after a steal on an in-bounds pass, and a layup by Chimienti got the Raiders within seven, but SU could not get any closer.
Miller finished with eight points and five rebounds, while Chimienti and senior
Carolina Rodriguez Sanchez each tallied five total points. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.
Shippensburg will host Jefferson at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
