RECAP: Volleyball tripped up at Frostburg State in straight sets

Townsend paces offense with seven kills

The Shippensburg University volleyball team endured a setback Tuesday night as it dropped a non-conference match at Frostburg State. Set scores were 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23 in favor of the host Bobcats.

Shippensburg (15-7) was inefficient on offense, swinging just .048 – its third-lowest hitting output of the season. SU could not overcome 23 attack errors – including eight blocks by the hosts.

Frostburg State (10-12) hit .214, totaling 12 or more kills in each set, and recorded seven of its eight blocks in the first two sets. The Bobcats had three players with double-digit kills, including a match-high 12 from Maddie Lewis, while libero Fiona Gonzalez Medina and setter Hayley Delor combined for an impressive 39 digs.

Senior Kaitlyn Townsend paced the Raider offense with seven kills, just one error and a .400 hitting percentage. Freshman Hailey Cappleman contributed five kills off the bench and hit .143.

Junior Maddie Clabaugh had six kills, 11 digs and two aces, while freshman Gracen Nutt had five kills, six digs and three aces. Sophomore Kearstin Davis had 11 digs but managed just 20 assists.

The first set was within three points for the duration. SU snatched a 19-18 lead before a 5-1 run gave Frostburg a 23-20 advantage. The two teams then traded points until the Bobcats reached 25. The second set was 13-13 when the hosts embarked upon a decisive 12-2 run to close the frame and take a 2-0 lead.

SU used a 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead in the third set. The Raiders still led 18-12 before the Bobcats began chipping away. A 7-1 run made it 19-19, but a Townsend kill restored the Raider lead temporarily. Beverly Braun countered with a kill and then began a four-point service run that she led off with back-to-back aces for the decisive final surge.

Shippensburg returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Shepherd at Heiges Field House.
