SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team surged to a season-high seven goals Saturday in a convincing victory over Slippery Rock, 7-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) bout at a wet and rainy Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (11-2, 5-0 PSAC) got a career-best four goals from junior
Tess Jedeloo and two goals from sophomore
Agus Garibaldi in the victory. It is the first four-goal game by a Raider in nearly two years.
Â
Slippery Rock (2-10, 0-5) recorded a consolation goal late in the fourth quarter courtesy of Samantha Karmonick, marking the first fourth-quarter goal allowed by the Raiders this season. The Rock goalkeeper Grace Burker faced a total of 20 shots (14 on goal) and was credited with seven saves.
Â
The goal-scoring barrage came following a scoreless first 15 minutes. Once the Raiders adjusted to the poor conditions, they spent much of the remaining three quarters deep in the attacking zone.
Â
SU opened the scoring just moments after the start of the second quarter. Jedeloo split a pair of Slippery Rock defenders before sending a cross into the circle. Garibaldi beat a defender to the ball and delivered a reverse hit to the bottom right corner of the cage for a goal.
Â
Jedeloo scored the first of her four tallies on a lightning quick SU counterattack of a feed from sophomore
Lilly Cantabene a few minutes later.
Â
Garibaldi made it a three-goal second quarter, hammering home a penalty corner insert from freshman
Hannah White.
Â
Jedeloo added a pair of tallies in the third quarter, the second a vicious reverse hit off a long feed from Cantabene.
Â
In the fourth quarter, Garibaldi took the ball off the stick of a Rock defender in front of the goal and dished it to Jedeloo for her fourth. Freshman
Mckenna Boyle later buried a fourth-quarter penalty stroke to wrap up the Raider scoring.
Â
Jedeloo finished the game with a new career-best nine points.
Â
Junior
Lindsay Tripodo got the start in the cage for the Raiders and recorded three saves in 45 minutes of action.
Â
The win sets the stage for a crucial mid-week road contest at No. 1-ranked East Stroudsburg at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
