Senior forward
Lauren Pettis paced the Shippensburg University women's basketball team to a 93-82 win over Edinboro in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse.
Pettis became the first Raider to have a 20-piece game (20+ points and rebounds) since 2010, when Lauren Beckley scored 27 points and had 20 rebounds. Pettis ended the night with 23 points and 20 rebounds as well as two steals and a block. She went 8-of-14 from the field and was 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Senior
Ariel Jones led the team with 29 points, her seventh 20+ point game this season. Jones started the night with only seven points since she was in foul trouble by the end of the first quarter. She came back in the second half going 4-of-7 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Jones added three steals, four assists and two rebounds. Jones is now second all-time in PSAC career points with 2,305 points, surpassing Valerie Walker of Cheyney (1978-82).
"It was a team effort," said head coach
Kristy Trn. "I don't have enough words to explain how proud I am of these ladies. Not only did Ariel, Pettis, Treasure and Abbie perform big, but Erin also stepped up and hit some huge shots that we needed."
Trn added: "The team was just incredible today and really supported everyone."
Shippensburg (11-2, 6-1 PSAC) trailed in the first half, in a tight physical game. In the second half, the Raiders came out strong going 50 percent from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, scoring 30 points in the third quarter. This is the first time this season the Riaders have scored 30 or more points in a quarter.
Junior
Treasure George had her 12th consecutive game in double figures with 13 points and one board shy from reaching her third double-double with nine rebounds. She was 7-of-10 from the free-throw line and added an assist.
Sophomore
Abbie Miller had her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also added three assists, a steal and a block, with only one turnover. She went 4-for-4 from the line and 4-of-5 from the field.
Graduate
Erin Gibbons topped the night off with 11 points, going 4-of-9 from the field and banking two threes. She added a team-high four assists, one steal and two rebounds.
SU had all five starters in double figures; this is the first time since last year when SU defeated Salem (Nov. 28).
Shippensburg outrebounded Edinboro (8-4, 5-2), 54-40, and scored 44 points in the paint. Edinboro leads the league in conference in opponent turnovers with 29.1 per game, and the Raiders held their own, committing 21 turnovers.
Shippensburg will travel to West Chester on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
