RECAP: Women’s Basketball defeats rival West Chester, 83-70

Jones scores 28 points; Gibbons sinks four threes in the win

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team went on an 18-to-5 point run in the third quarter to secure a win Wednesday night on the road at West Chester (7-7, 4-4 PSAC), 83-70, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game.

Shippensburg (12-2, 7-1 PSAC) went neck-and-neck against the Rams in the first half of the game, trailing 39-37 at the half. In the third quarter, the Raiders went 5-for-8 behind the arc to secure a lead. In the final quarter, Shippensburg shot 11-for-12 at the free-throw line to clinch the win.

Senior Ariel Jones, the PSAC's all-time free-throw leader, went a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. Jones led the Raiders with 28 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior Lauren Pettis paced the Raiders with her second straight double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Graduate Erin Gibbons went 4-for-5 behind the arc, scoring two more three-pointers than her previous Shippensburg game high, and just one short of her career high. She finished with 14 points.

Junior Treasure George posted double figures for the 13th straight game with 12 points. Sophomore Abbie Miller aided the Raiders with eight rebounds and four points.

West Chester's junior Leah Johnson hit a buzzer-beater in both the first and second quarter to aid the Ram momentum. Sophomore Anna McTamney led the Rams with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Rams led by as many as eight points midway through the third quarter. WCU got within one point of the lead with 4:30 to play but was unable to secure a lead as SU closed on a 15-3 run.

Shippensburg is set to host Mansfield on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Heiges Field House.
