MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team started strong on Friday night, winning the first set, but it was not enough to defeat Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Pucillo Gym. Set scores were 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, and 17-25.
Â
Shippensburg (8-9, 2-2 PSAC East) was led by senior
Oyinda Agbale who had 14 kills and only one error. She added four blocks and hit .464.
Jordan Bowen ripped seven kills -- her second-most in a match this season -- and did not have an error. She hit .333.
Sophomore
Kat Negron led the team with a team-high 16 digs, while freshman
Kearstin Davis had a team-high 36 assists and added 10 digs.
Â
The Raiders had the swinging advantage with a .144 hit percentage, while Millersville (11-7, 2-2) hit .127. It was the Marauders' 10 service aces and strong back row that gave the Raiders a problem.
Â
In the first set, SU was in control and took a 16-8 lead and never trailed, with the Marauders rallying to reduce the deficit to five points before a bad set gave the Raiders the opening frame.
In the second set, the Raiders rallied from behind. Millersville had an 18-7 lead, but the Raiders closed in and used a 10-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. However, a service error from Shippensburg and an ace from Millersville secured the second set for the Marauders.
Â
The Raiders took a 5-2 lead in the third set but were unable to take back the lead after Millersville tied it at 5-5. SU saved five set points but it was not enough to tie it.
Â
The fourth set saw seven ties and two lead changes. Millersville went on an 12-3 run to take the lead, 22-14. Shippensburg was unable to answer back and a kill from Emma Ludwig secured the victory.
Â
Shippensburg will travel to West Chester tomorrow for another PSAC East matchup at 2 p.m.Â
