The Shippensburg University volleyball team won its morning match against Chowan, 3-1, but struggled against West Virginia State, losing 3-0 to the Yellowjackets at the Virginia State University Home Opener.
Set scores against Chowan were 25-20, 23-25, 25-9 and 25-17. Set scores against West Virginia State were 16-25, 16-25 and 21-25.
Shippensburg (2-4) compiled 73 kills over the course of the two matches, with senior
Rachel Verhoef leading the team with 12 kills overall.
The Raiders will play Elizabeth City State at 9 a.m. tomorrow and host Virginia State at 1 p.m.
Shippensburg 3, Chowan 1
Sophomore
Maddie Clabaugh led the team with nine kills and only made two errors. Clabaugh also had two aces and 11 digs. Fellow sophomore
Kat Negron had seven kills, three aces and eight digs.
Verhoef led the team with five blocks and added six kills. Freshman setter
Kearstin Davis had 17 assists and a career-high 12 digs, while freshman libero
Erica Lampus had a career-high 18 digs.
The Raiders took control of the first set with a 9-3 run and kept the lead to win the first set. However, in the second set, Chowan (2-2) came back from a four-point deficit and went on a 5-0 run and took the second set.
SU dominated the third set and only allowed the Hawks to have nine points; the Raiders only had two errors, in comparison to Chowan's 11 errors. In the fourth set, the Raiders only had one error and dominated at the net with seven blocks.
West Virginia State 3, Shippensburg 0
Verhoef and Negron led the team with six kills each, while Davis had 10 assists.
SU struggled to over-power West Virginia State (4-1), who totaled 50 kills. The Yellowjackets were consistent and had double-digit kills each set. The Raiders tried to fight back in the third set, but strong hitting from WVSU sealed the victory.
