The Shippensburg University women's tennis team recorded a win in its season opener on Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) non-conference matchup at Clarion by a score of 4-3 at Campbell Courts.
Shippensburg (1-0) won three singles matches and the doubles point over Clarion (0-1).
The Golden Eagles had only five players and had to forfeit No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, which gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead before double and singles matches started.
At No. 1 doubles, junior
Brighid Cantwell and freshman Corrine Markovich dropped the match 6-4, while the No. 2 sophomore pair
Brooklynn Rupert and
Kendall Winters clinched the point with a 6-3 victory.
The Raiders were down 3-2 during the singles matches, however, Winters and senior
Sahar Islam battled back in their respective matchups and won at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Islam won her first set and was down 5-1 in the second but rallied and won six straight games.
The Raiders will travel to Dickinson on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
