RECAP: No. 2 Field Hockey wins OT thriller over Mansfield, 4-3

Jedeloo scores the golden goal

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey fought back Wednesday with an overtime goal by sophomore Tess Jedeloo to defeat Mansfield, 4-3, in a non-conference match up on a sunny afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (4-0) got its four goals, two from reigning PSAC and NFHCA Offensive Athlete of the Week, freshman Agus Garibaldi and two from Jedeloo.

The Raiders struck first in the first quarter with a quick reverse hit goal by Jedeloo that was assisted by Garibaldi from the top of the circle. The second goal came from a penalty stroke by Garibaldi, a penalty corner was taken beforehand and caused a penalty stroke to happen.

Mansfield (2-2) with the counterattack scored with 90 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Mountaineers scored again in the second quarter with less than 30 seconds left to tie the game 2-2 going into halftime.

SU re-gained the lead with 2:03 left in the third quarter off a penalty corner. Garibaldi slapped the shot to the bottom left corner of the cage off the penalty insert by senior Maura Mears. Mansfield tied the game with less than three minutes left in the game and outshot the Raiders 3-1 in the fourth quarter.

In overtime, the Raiders were on the attack, but Mansfield goalkeeper August Lewis had three big saves, including two off a penalty corner. With less than two minutes left in overtime, the Raiders found a breakaway thanks to sophomore Valu Paul, who was able to pass to Jedeloo and had a one-on-one with Lewis, and scored with a spin move.

The last time Shippensburg and Mansfield went to overtime was in 1997, and the Raiders won that game in double overtime, 1-0.

The Raiders will be travel to Limestone for two non-conference matches, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Belmont Abbey and Sunday at 11 a.m. against Limestone.
