SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team recorded its first home win in three years on Saturday with a conference crossover win over Clarion, 7-0, at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (2-9) won all four of the contested singled matches and claimed the doubles point as well. Clarion (1-11) had only four players and had to forfeit No. 5 and No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, which gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead before doubles and singles matches started.
Â
At No. 1 doubles, the Dutch pair of senior
Jenna Sluymer and sophomore
Merel Hoekstra adjusted to their opponents slices and won 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, freshman
Brooklynn Rupert and junior
Sahar Islam fought hard from 5-3 down but fell 7-5. SU claimed the doubles point because of the default at No. 3 doubles, giving the Raiders a 2-1 edge.
Â
At No. 1 singles, Sluymer battled her way back from 5-2 down in the first set to win the tiebreak, 7-5. In the second set, after falling behind 2-0, Sluymer came back to win the final six games and win 6-2. It is her fourth victory at No. 1 singles this spring.
Â
At No. 2 singles, sophomore
Brighid Cantwell had a tough battle and dropped the first set but changed her gameplan and became more aggressive, winning the second set 6-3 and the third-set tiebreak, 10-4, to claim victory. Â
Â
Freshman
Kendall Winters clinched the match for the Raiders at No. 3 singles as she won, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, senior
Kayla Tryanski moved her opponent around and was patient when finishing the points to win 6-2, 6-2.
Â
It is Shippensburg's first home victory since March 16, 2019 against Holy Family.
Â
The Raiders will travel to Shepherd on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Rams.
