SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team used a four-goal run in the fourth quarter on Tuesday to get within a goal of visiting Millersville, but the Raider rally came up just short in a 12-11 loss to the Marauders on a cloudy and cool afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (2-9, 0-6 PSAC East) suffered its third one-goal loss in Eastern Division play this season, once again keeping close to the very end against a conference rival. Neither team scored in the game's first 11 minutes, with the score sitting at 1-1 after the opening quarter.
Â
Millersville (8-3, 4-2) scored twice in the final 45 seconds of the second quarter to head into halftime with momentum and a 6-3 advantage. The Marauders led by as many as five goals in the game, at 8-3 in the third quarter and 11-6 early in the fourth quarter.
Â
The momentum began to swing for the Raiders late in the third quarter when senior
Hannah Seifried drew a charge that eventually resulted in a Marauder yellow card. With 13 minutes remaining, the Raiders scored four times in a 4:39 span to get within one goal, 11-10, with 8:09 left.
Â
MU called a timeout and responded 30 seconds later with a goal, but a Seifried tally got the Raiders back within a goal with 4:43 remaining. There would be no more scoring the rest of the way, however, with a game-tying bid in the final 30 seconds by graduate
Alana Cardaci being denied by Marauder goalkeeper Morgan Scott.
Â
Seifried led the Raiders with five goals in addition to recording three draw controls, two groundballs and an assist. It was her seventh hat trick of the season. Freshman
Jamie Carvin equaled her season high with two goals.
Â
Senior
Gabby Savarino had a goal and a team-high five draw controls. Fellow senior
Jena MacDonald had a goal and three assists. Freshman
Sara Vosburg and senior
Kasey Schuchardt also found the back of the net.
Â
Freshman
Kayla Vosburg made eight saves for the Raiders and led the team with three groundballs. Scott had 11 saves for the Marauders.
Â
Millersville got six goals from Gillian Zimmerman, seven assists from Amanda Juliano and 11 draw controls from Grace Cobaugh. The Marauders finished with a 17-10 advantage in draws.
Â
Shippensburg will host No. 7 West Chester at 1 p.m. Saturday on Rise for Wise Day at Robb Sports Complex. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Donations will be collected at the game with the proceeds going to METAvivor (metastatic breast cancer awareness).
