RECAP: Baseball dispatches Mansfield, 18-6

SU totaled 21 hits in the victory

The Shippensburg University baseball team totaled 21 hits and scored in six different innings on Friday to win on the road at Mansfield, 18-6, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at historic Shaute Field.

Shippensburg (23-20, 13-6 PSAC East) built a 9-2 lead through six innings before Mansfield (20-20, 11-8) scored four runs against three different Raider pitchers in the seventh to make it 9-6. SU countered with a seven-run eighth inning and two more in the ninth inning to gain the lopsided victory over the Mountaineers.

All 10 Raiders that came to bat on Friday had at least one hit. Sophomore Joe Barbera was 4-for-5 with a double, RBI, walk and two runs scored out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order. Senior Justin Darden was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Redshirt-sophomore Justin Byler had three hits and an RBI.

The SU shortstops combined for four hits and seven RBIs. Freshman Carter Hinds was 2-for-4 with three RBIs before having to leave the game, his replacement, senior Andres Garcia, hit two-run singles in both the eighth and ninth inning.

Redshirt-junior Nick Zegna improved to 7-3 on the season, allowing five runs (four earned) over 6.2 innings. Zegna scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out seven. Redshirt-freshman Cameron Goble faced two batters in the seventh, and sophomore Austen Labarre got the final seven outs, including three strikeouts.

Shippensburg will host the Mounties at noon tomorrow for a Senior Day doubleheader at Fairchild Field. The senior ceremony will take place between games.
