SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team began its weekend series with Shepherd on Friday with a 4-3 victory in a Pennsylvania Student Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division nine-inning game at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (8-17, 3-4 PSAC East) and Shepherd (8-9-1, 3-3-1 PSAC East) played briskly, reaching the ninth inning in under two hours.
Senior
Ben Werkheiser started the scoring for the Raiders with a two-run homer to left field in the second inning. In the following inning, sophomore
Andrew Chronister singled off the shortstop's glove to bring in two more runs. Chronister was 3-for-4 at the plate in the game.
Down to their last out and down by four, the Rams made the game interesting. Sam Daggers hit a ground ball which would have been the final out but SU was unable to convert, which allowed one run to score. The next batter, Ryan Haddaway, hit a single to center field which drove in two more runs to make it a one-run deficit.
The Raiders dispatched sophomore
Jackson LoBianco out of the bullpen to record the one-out save; on his fourth pitch he induced a flyout to sophomore right fielder
Jafari Williams to end the game.
Redshirt-junior
Nick Zegna pitched seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts, only allowing three hits in the win. Shepherd's Nick Trabacchi went six innings and struck out four.
Shippensburg will face Shepherd at noon tomorrow in a doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
