Morgan DeFeo tied two NCAA single-game records to help the Shippensburg University softball team end the weekend with a split at the Glenville State Tournament, defeating the host Pioneers by a score of 22-14 after losing to West Virginia State, 9-6.
DeFeo singled in all six of her plate appearances against Glenville State and came around to score after each single.
Per the NCAA record books it is the 11th time that a player has had six hits in a single game, and the 12th time that a player has had six runs in a game. DeFeo joins three Raiders in the record books: in Shippensburg's 43-0 win over Virginia Union on Mar. 20, 2004, Amanda Collins, Brenna Eck and Liz Corr had six hits, and Eck scored six runs.
Game 1: West Virginia State 9, Shippensburg 6
The Raiders opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a double from junior
Hannah Marsteller that scored senior
Morgan DeFeo. The Yellow Jackets answered back with two runs in the top of the second inning. A four-run bottom of the second inning included a home run by sophomore
Morgan Lindsay, a two-run double by DeFeo and an RBI-single by Marsteller that gave the Raiders a 5-2 lead.
WVSU hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to decrease its deficit to one run, but Marsteller answered with a home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-4 SU lead. The Yellow Jackets secured the victory with a late comeback, scoringfive runs in the sixth inning.
Redshirt-sophomore
Maddie Uschock started in the circle for the Raiders. She threw 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. Freshman
Katelyn Minney came in for the Raiders as the relief pitcher and threw 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Marsteller led the Raiders with three hits and three RBIs. DeFeo had three hits and two RBIs.
Game 2: Shippensburg 22, Glenville State 14
Shippensburg went back and forth with Glenville State. SU scored at least one run in all seven innings, and there was only one 1-2-3 inning (bottom of the second) in the entire game.
The Raiders opened with a single from sophomore
Morgan Lindsay that scored DeFeo. In the bottom of the first, the Pioneers answered back with five runs.
SU scored one run in the second and two in the third before tying the game in the fourth inning after DeFeo singled to left field to score freshman
Ally Weaver. Junior
Hannah Marsteller topped off a four-run inning with a three-run home run to take an 8-5 lead. The Raider momentum carried over to the fifth inning with four more runs, giving SU a 12-5 lead. However, Glenville came back swinging with a seven-run bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 12-12.
The Raiders immediately scored six runs in the sixth to take back the lead at 18-12. The Pioneers scored two runs in the sixth, SU scored four more in the seventh, and that created the final 22-14 margin.
In addition to DeFeo going 6-for-6 with six runs, sophomore
Alyssa Nehlen was also perfect, going 4-of-4 with a walk, three RBIs and three runs. Junior
Taylor Radziewicz had three hits and one RBI. Marsteller added a sacrifice fly to finish with four RBIs.
Lindsay finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs. Sophomore
Taylor Myers was 2-for-5 with an RBI, walk and two runs scored.
Freshmen
Aryanna Briddell and
Emma Mackulin both contributed two RBIs. Mackulin with two hits.
Freshman pitcher
Alicia Ball started in the circle for the Raiders. Relief pitcher sophomore
Emma Flattery threw 4.1 innings with five strikeouts. Freshman pitcher

Maddie Uschock threw the final 2.0 innings.
The Raiders only had one extra-base hit: Marsteller's home run. SU had 21 singles.
After a week in Shippensburg, the Raiders will leave next weekend for Florida for 10 spring games. The Florida schedule begins Mar. 6 at 1:30 p.m. against Sioux Falls.
