SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team opened the 2022 season with a split on Friday at Glenville State Tournament, an 8-3 victory over Clarion and an 8-0 defeat to IUP.

Shippensburg (1-1) recorded 12 hits on the day, three homeruns, five total extra-base hits and two stolen bases.

Shippensburg held a 1-0 lead after the first inning after a sacrifice fly from junior
Hannah Marsteller that scored sophomore
Taylor Myers. The Golden Eagles tied the game, but the Raiders scored twice in the fourth to re-gain the lead.

In the fifth, Marsteller and sophomore
Morgan Lindsay hit back-to-back home runs, followed by a two-run home run by senior
Hannah Johnson. SU added one more run in the sixth.

Lindsay had two hits and two runs. Marsteller had two hits and hit a sacrifice fly for a total of three RBIs. Myers had two runs and two hits. Johnson also hit a sacrifice fly for a three-RBI game.

Freshman
Alicia Ball was busy in the circle for the Raiders. Making her collegiate debut, Ball threw 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts and allowed five hits. Sophomore
Emma Flattery threw 2.0 innings in relief with three strikeouts.

The Raiders gave up five runs in the first two innings and could not recover from their early deficit. Sophomore
Maelynn Leber got the start and allowed three runs in the first inning. Junior
Hannah Palinkas gave up two runs and a walk in relief, while Flattery threw 2.2 innings as well, allowing three runs with three strikeouts.

Morgan DeFeo. DeFeo's hit was a double.

Shippensburg will face West Virginia State at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow and host Glenville State at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
