SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team used a six-goal first quarter to establish an early lead and defeat Holy Family in the 2022 season opener on Wednesday, defeating the Tigers by a score of 15-5 on a windy afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (1-0) led 6-2 after the first quarter and 8-3 at halftime. The Raider defense limited Holy Family to one goal in a 27-minute span from the 8:17 mark of the first quarter to the 0:07 mark of the third quarter – leading 11-4 after the third quarter. Â

SU got four goals and an assist from graduate
Alana Cardaci, a hat trick and three assists from senior
Jena MacDonald, and four goals by senior
Hannah Seifried.

Nine different Raiders finished the game with at least one point. Senior
Sydney Costanza had a goal and two assists, and junior
Abby Seasock had a goal and an assist. Senior
Kasey Schuchardt and sophomore
Emily Fenwick each had one goal, and freshman
Sara Vosburg had an assist.

The SU defense totaled nine caused turnovers – including two by Vosburg. Eight different Raiders collected multiple groundballs.

Ally Weneta was staunch in goal, making nine saves. She also had a caused turnover and two groundballs.
The win marked the first career head coaching victory for Shippensburg's
Brooke Sabol, who spent a total of five seasons as an assistant coach at two different schools before she was hired to lead the Raiders in November.

Shippensburg will travel to No. 18 Seton Hill on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against the Griffins.
