RECAP: Women’s Basketball stopped late at Shepherd, 79-73

Jefferson leads the Raiders with 22 points; Green makes her fifth double-double

The Shippensburg University women's basketball team had a strong effort Wednesday night at Shepherd but was tripped up late in the fourth quarter by the Rams, falling 79-73 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at the Butcher Athletic Center.

Shippensburg (16-11, 12-9 PSAC) opened the first quarter with a 6-2 run and held Shepherd (21-6, 15-6) to 31-percent shooting from the field. The game was a back-and-forth battle of runs. The Raiders started the second quarter with a 12-2 run, leading by as many as 13 points, but the Rams answered back with an 11-1 run at the end of the second quarter to get within three points at halftime.

Shepherd took a one-point into the final quarter. The Raiders led by as many as eight points late in the game, but a 15-0 run down the stretch by the Rams was the difference.

Shippensburg posted a 38-35 rebound advantage over Shepherd, while the Rams scored 30 points off the Raiders 23 turnovers.

Senior Destiny Jefferson led the Raiders with 22 points, her 35th career game with 20 or more points. She went 5-of-7 from the field in the first half and finished with six rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Junior Aunbrielle Green posted her fifth double-double this season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She was perfect from the free-throw line, going 10-of-10. It is the most free throws made without a miss by a Raider since Ariel Jones was 14-of-14 against Shepherd in the 2020 PSAC Tournament.

Sophomore Treasure George contributed 13 points and three rebounds. Freshman Taja Colbert added six points, two assists and a steal. Junior Lauren Pettis had three blocks.

Shepherd had three players with double figures. Abby Beeman led the Rams with 28 points. Sydney Clayton posted a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Marley McLaughlin had 19 points.

Shippensburg is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Kutztown at Heiges Field House for Senior Day. It will be the final game of the regular season.

SU is locked into the No. 4 seed and will host Lock Haven, the No. 5 seed, on Monday night in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. The game time is still to be determined pending the results of the men's games on Saturday.
