The Shippensburg University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire on Monday night, staving off a late comeback bid by host West Chester to defeat the Golden Rams, 71-64, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Hollinger Field House.
Shippensburg (15-10, 11-8 PSAC) earned a season series sweep over West Chester (7-16, 5-12) by limiting the Golden Rams to 33-percent shooting from the field in the first half to establish a 15-point halftime lead, 40-25. The Raiders went on a 10-2 run at the start of the first quarter.
SU stretched its lead to as many as 18 points, but West Chester countered with a 10-0 run in the middle of the third quarter. With 1:07 left in the game, WCU narrowed the deficit to three points, but the Raiders responded with a driving layup from junior
Lauren Mills and held the Golden Rams scoreless the rest of the way.
Shippensburg finished the game 25-of-31 (80.6 percent) at the free-throw line, its third time shooting 80 percent or better this season and its second-most free throws in a game. West Chester was 5-of-8 at the free-throw line, with its first free-throw attempt awarded in the final seconds of the second quarter. SU scored 30 points in the paint and 17 points off turnovers, while WCU posted a 42-37 rebound advantage.
Junior
Aunbrielle Green posted her fourth double-double of the season and the 14th of her career with a career-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds. She was also 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Her 22 points surpasses her previous career high of 21 set on four other occasions.
Senior
Destiny Jefferson had 18 points, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc. She matched a season high with seven assists and added five rebounds.
Mills added 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals. She went 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. Fellow junior
Lauren Pettis contributed seven points.
Sophomore
Treasure George was perfect from the free-throw line, going 6-of-6, and added four rebounds and three steals. Redshirt-junior
Erin Gibbons contributed six points, two assists and a steal.
West Chester was led by Alexa Abbonizio with 22 points and Leah Johnson added 19 points.
Shippensburg has its divisional "bye" on Wednesday and will next play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bloomsburg.
