SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team built a double-digit halftime lead to defeat No. 15 California (Pa.), 76-57, on Friday night at Heiges Field House in its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup of the season.
Shippensburg (5-1, 1-0 PSAC) controlled the tempo from start to finish. The Raiders held California (Pa.) (4-2, 0-1) to 57 points, its lowest point total this season. The Vulcans had previously scored at least 70 points in its first five contests.
Senior
Ariel Jones led the Raider offense from the start, reaching double figures in the first quarter. Jones ended the game with 35 points and 13 rebounds, recording her first double-double of the season and the seventh of her career. Jones's 13 rebounds was also a career high. She is now seventh all-time in career scoring in the PSAC, surpassing Sara McKinney of California (Pa.) who reached 2,121 career points.
Junior guard
Treasure George was second in scoring for the Raiders with 13 points, her fifth double-digit scoring game this season. Sophomore guard
Taja Colbert also finished the contest in double-figures with 11 points.
Shippensburg out-rebounded California (Pa.) in a 49-46 advantage. On the offensive end, the Raiders grabbed 22 rebounds and converted 20 second-chance points.
Senior
Lauren Pettis contributed 10 rebounds and added five points despite missing most of the first quarter due to foul trouble. Freshman
Makayla Foddrell had a career high as a Raider with four points and secured five rebounds.
Coming off the bench, sophomore forward
Abbie Miller had six points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Vulcans could not find rhythm from behind the arc, shooting just 13.6 percent. They were led by senior guard Ciaira Lloyd with 21 points.
Shippensburg is back at Heiges Field House to face Slippery Rock in another Western division matchup at 5:30 p.m.
