SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 2 Shippensburg University field hockey team held off a late rally by No. 8 Converse on Monday to claim a 3-2 victory at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (14-2) started off strong in the second and third quarter with 16 total shots and held Converse (14-2) without a shot in the second quarter. The Raiders got their first goal off a rebound from sophomore Valu Paul that was knocked home by fellow sophomore Chloe Prettyman.

The second goal came from a quick sideline pass from freshman Savannah Silvestre to Paul, who linked up with fellow forward sophomore Tess Jedeloo.

In the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, Converse scored from a deflection to reduce the deficit to one goal. SU answered back within 30 seconds with a rocket shot from freshman Agus Garibaldi off an insert corner pass by Silvestre.

With less than four minutes left in the game, the Valkyries were able to convert a penalty corner into a penalty stroke and a score.

Sophomore Lindsay Tripodo was busy and tied her career high of 10 saves; her previous 10-save effort came last season against West Chester. Senior Merel Hoekstra also helped the Raiders out with two defensive saves late in the fourth quarter.

Converse outshot Shippensburg 14-7 on target; the Valkyries had a 12-2 edge in shots in the fourth quarter.

Shippensburg will conclude its regular season play with a road game at Mercyhurst on Saturday at 1 p.m.
