SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's basketball team closed on an 11-0 run Saturday to surge late in the fourth quarter and defeat the Bald Eagles by a score of 59-52 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) conference match at Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (9-7, 5-5 PSAC) held Lock Haven (7-8, 4-7) to 24 percent shooting in the first half to lead by five at the break, 28-23. SU went on a 10-2 run during the first quarter.
The Bald Eagles responded in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field and getting a pair of three-pointers in the final 1:14 from Audrey Weigl to take a 41-40 lead entering the fourth.
The Raiders tied the game at 7:44 on a layup by junior
Aunbrielle Green, who scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Bald Eagles used a 6-0 run to re-take the lead again with 5:35 left, but the Raiders held them scoreless for the remainder of the game. SU closed on an 11-0 run that included sophomore
Treasure George scoring four points and drawing three charges on the defensive end.
Green's 14 points marked her fourth game in double figures this season. She added nine rebounds, just one shy away from a double-double, and a steal.
Junior
Lauren Mills was the second Raider in double figures, scoring 13 points and shooting 6-of-9 from the field. She added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and did not commit any turnover while rotating between multiple positions.
Senior
Destiny Jefferson was the final Raider in double figures with 11 points and was also one rebounds shy of a double-double. She was 7-of-9 at the free-throw line and had a team-high five assists to go along with two steals.
George had a career high four steals while adding eight points, two rebounds and an assist. Junior
Lauren Pettis contributed six rebounds, a block and a steal. Freshman
Taja Colbert scored five points and fellow freshman
Ali Hauck scored four points and had a career high with two steals.
The Raiders posted a 45-37 rebound advantage over Lock Haven, the PSAC's top rebounding team. SU also scored 40 of its 59 points in the paint.
Lock Haven was led by Weigl's 16 points and Brooke Lawyer had 11 points and seven rebounds. Ahnera Parker, the league's No. 2 rebounder, had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Saturday marked Diversity Day, in which SU Basketball hosted representatives from OneSHIP, the PAGE center (the alliance of the Women's Center and Pride Center) and Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA).
Shippensburg is back in action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Bloomsburg at Heiges Field House.
