RECAP: No. 1 Field Hockey withstands late charge to beat Queens, 4-2

Petrantonio totals two goals and an assist in the win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team led 3-0 with less than five minutes remaining Sunday but had to withstand a late charge from Queens University of Charlotte to ultimately claim a 4-2 victory over the visiting Royals at sunny Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (6-0), playing its second match in 24 hours, did not allow a shot until the fourth quarter and finished with a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Raiders scored three goals in the first 16 minutes – one each from senior Jazmin Petrantonio, graduate Tori Albright and senior Jenna Sluymer, to take control.

Queens (3-4) did not relent, scoring twice against the Raider reserves in a 1:41 span of the fourth quarter to make it a one-goal game. Cassie McKenzie scored off a corner, and Gabe Lechner dove to tip in a Molly Walter centering pass, and suddenly the score was 3-2 with 3:13 remaining.

The Raiders controlled possession for much of the final three minutes, and a goal by Petrantonio on an untimed penalty corner at the end of the match created the final 4-2 scoring margin.

Freshman Lindsay Tripodo and senior Meg Thompson split the time in goal for the Raiders – with Thompson working the third quarter and Tripodo in otherwise. Queens goalkeepers Marlee Geppert and Avian Thompson combined for 14 saves for the Royals.

Petrantonio, graduate Caitlyn Wink and freshman Valu Paul had assists for the Raiders.

Shippensburg returns to conference play Wednesday with a big match at No. 3 East Stroudsburg, winners of seven straight. The match begins at 3 p.m. at Whitenight Field.
