Hannah Marsteller set the single-season school record for home runs and head coach
Alison Van Scyoc surpassed 100 career victories on Friday as the Shippensburg University softball team swept No. 23 Kutztown, 11-2 and 8-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at North Campus Field.
Â
Shippensburg (15-13, 13-11 PSAC East) had 12 hits in each game as its offense once erupted with fury, slugging six home runs and six doubles. It is the first time since 2013 that the Raiders have posted a road sweep at Kutztown (19-7, 16-6).
Â
Marsteller finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate, hitting three home runs, totaling five RBIs, scoring four runs, and stealing a base. She reached base in seven of her nine plate appearances, as she also drew two walks and was hit by a pitch.
Â
Through 28 games this season, Marsteller has 15 home runs and 46 RBIs. The previous single-season school record of 12 home runs was set by Nicole Henninger in 2007 and matched by Taylor Weisman in 2014.
Â
All nine Raiders had at least one hit on Friday.
Courtney Coy broke through for four extra-base hits, including two solo home runs and a double in Game 2. In the final three games of the series, Coy went 6-for-11 at the plate to raise her season batting average by 53 points.
Â
Morgan DeFeo and
Toni Jones each had four hits and scored two runs.
Maelynn Leber had three hits, including a two-run double in the first inning of Game 1.
Â
Freshmen pitchers
Brianna Small and
Emma Flattery walked just one batter in 14 innings of work and totaled 11 strikeouts. Small won both games, pitching the final 10.1 innings of the doubleheader and allowing just two runs on eight hits. She struck out nine without a walk.
Â
Friday's sweep improved Van Scyoc's career record to 101-81. She is in her fifth season at the helm of the Raiders.
Â
Game 1: Shippensburg 11, Kutztown 2
Shippensburg jumped on KU ace Bridget Bailey, who entered Friday with a 10-0 record. Bailey faced six batters and did not record an out, and SU had a 6-0 lead just seven batters in. After a leadoff error, DeFeo had a bunt single and
Alyssa Nehlen doubled home
Taylor Myers.
Â
Marsteller then roped an 0-2 pitch off the shed over the right-field fence for a three-run home run that gave her sole possession of the single-season school record. After the home run,
Taylor Radziewicz walked, Jones doubled, and Leber doubled them both home to chase Bailey. A Radziewicz fielder's choice in the second made it 7-0.
Â
Flattery retired 11 of the first 12 batters she faced and took a no-hitter into the fourth. With two outs, KU rallied for a home run, single, walk and single to chase Flattery. Small entered and hit the first batter she faced, loading the bases with the score 7-2. In a seven-pitch at-bat, Small then struck out pinch hitter Becca Hubler to end the inning.
Â
Small gave up just one hit the rest of the way, a bunt single with two outs in the seventh.
Â
SU added four more runs in the top of the seventh. Marsteller homered to lead off the inning. After back-to-back singles by Jones and Leber, Coy hit an RBI-double and
Lacey Hunter walked to load the bases. The final two runs scored on an infield single by Myers and an error.
Â
Game 2: Shippensburg 8, Kutztown 2
Early momentum was key again for the Raiders, as two runs in both the first and second inning made the score 4-1. RBI-singles by Radziewicz and Jones plated runs in the first, and solo homers by Coy and Hunter occurred in the second. Marsteller homered for the third time on the day in the fifth, and pinch runner
Sydney Reffner scored in the sixth after a Coy double, and another run scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Small threw just 81 pitches in Game 2 to record her third complete game of the year.
