RECAP: Lacrosse rallies to win home finale over Kutztown, 12-11

Seifried scores game-winner, posts seventh hat trick of the season

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team rallied Saturday to claim victory in its home finale, scoring the final three goals en route to a 12-11 win over Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (5-7, 5-6 PSAC East) only held one lead Saturday and it began with 1:10 remaining, as Hannah Seifried scored her fourth goal of the game by converting a free position.

Kutztown (1-10, 1-9) won the ensuing draw and fired a shot off the post with 44 seconds left. Jessica DeMarte scooped up the groundball, and the Raiders maintained possession for the remainder of the contest.

The Raiders yielded the first three goals of the second half to trail 9-6 and were behind 11-9 with 12:58 to go before holding the Golden Bears scoreless the rest of the way, closing on a 3-0 run.

Seifried finished with four goals, four draw controls and a pair of groundballs. It's her third straight hat trick and seventh of the season. Her 34 goals are tied for the second-most in the PSAC.

DeMarte, who had just one goal on the season entering the game, scored twice Saturday and equaled her career high with seven draw controls. SU finished with an 18-7 advantage in draw controls, including six straight in the second half until KU claimed the final control.

Freshman Bailey Krahl scored her first collegiate hat trick and had a pair of groundballs. Sophomore Kasey Schuchardt posted all sorts of single-game career highs, including two goals on free positions and four draw controls. She also had an assist. Hope Shearer scored her first career goal in the contest.

Clairanne Chairs had a career-high five groundballs and a caused turnover from the Raider back lines. Senior Madi Jones had two groundballs and a caused turnover.

Ally Weneta made 10 saves, including six in the second half, for the win. Her Golden Bear counterpart, Jenna Blesson, made 14 saves.

In a bit of happenstance, 12 is the magic number for Shippensburg this season, as it is the exact number of goals the Raiders have scored in all five of their wins. Saturday marks the third time this season that SU has won with a 12-11 score.

Shippensburg concludes its season at 4 p.m. Wednesday at East Stroudsburg.
