RECAP: Lacrosse gets in the win column with 12-5 road victory at Kutztown

Cardaci scores four goals; Krahl contributes six assists

The Shippensburg University lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season Saturday with an impressive road effort at Kutztown, defeating the Golden Bears by a 12-5 score in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Keystone Field.

Shippensburg (1-5, 1-4 PSAC East) got four goals from Alana Cardaci and a hat trick from Hannah Seifried, as the Raiders used a 5-0 run and a 3-0 run to establish a 9-3 halftime lead.

Freshman Bailey Krahl, who entered the game with six total points in her first five collegiate contests, had seven in Saturday's game (one goal, six assists). Her six assists are the most by a Raider since Kami Holt had six on April 24, 2019 at Lock Haven.

The key for the Raiders on Saturday was defense. Shippensburg limited Kutztown (1-4, 1-3) to just 11 shots on goal in 60 minutes of action and recorded nine caused turnovers. SU held the Golden Bears scoreless for a 17-minute stretch of the first half, and for the final 16:59 of the second half.

KiKi Brasher got the start in goal and made three saves in each half to record the win.

Cardaci and fellow senior Maddy Siejk were each credited with two caused turnovers, while five other Raiders collected one. Siejk had four groundballs and senior defensive captain Madi Jones had three, as six Raiders finished the game with multiple groundballs.

Shippensburg once again controlled the draw circle, finishing a 12-6 advantage in controls. SU held a 10-2 lead in draw controls at halftime. Seifried led all players with six draw controls. Sophomore Gabby Savarino had three draw controls and also scored twice.

Siejk and freshman Abby Seasock also added goals.

Shippensburg does not have a mid-week game this week. The Raiders return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg at Robb Sports Complex.
