SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team got seven combined goals Saturday from sophomore
Hannah Seifried and senior
Alana Cardaci, including the 100th goal of Cardaci's career, but the Raiders dropped a 15-11 decision to Millersville in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener from Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (0-2, 0-1 PSAC East) rallied from a four-goal halftime deficit to get within one of Millersville (1-1, 1-0), 11-10, with 15 minutes remaining. However, the Raiders managed just one goal down the stretch, a tally by senior
Jena MacDonald with 3:31 remaining, as the Marauders pulled away with a four-goal run.
Cardaci scored a hat trick in a 5:52 span of the first half to become the fifteenth Raider to reach the 100-goal mark in a career. She's the first Raider to achieve the feat since Sheila Johnson and Courtney Kennedy both did so in the 2015 season. It is the first hat trick of the season for Cardaci and the 18th of her career.
Siefried continued her goal-scoring blitz with four more on Saturday, marking her second straight hat trick to open the season. Dating back to the start of the 2020 season, Seifried has scored 26 goals in eight games, including hat tricks in six of them, and totaled 31 draw controls. She had a team-high six draw controls Saturday.
MacDonald moved into fifth place in SU's record book for career assists (61) after a helper on a second-half goal by sophomore
Sydney Costanza.
Sophomore
Gabby Savarino and freshman
Abby Seasock also found the back of the net. Seasock's goal was the first of her collegiate career; she also added an assist and led the team with four groundballs.
Senior
Jessica DeMarte had three draw controls and three groundballs. Freshman
Kayla Jones had two of SU's three caused turnovers.
Freshman
Ally Weneta got the start in goal and made 10 saves – five in each half. The Marauders out-shot the Raiders by six and held a 15-12 advantage in draw controls. There was no draw control at the end of the first half due to Millersville scoring on a free-position attempt as time expired.
The visitors got four goals from Grace Cobaugh and hat tricks from Charlotte Lasak and Hayden Corcoran. Sara Burney (two goals, three assists) had five points and Genevieve Speights led all players with 10 draw controls. Kaleigh Sasdell made six saves.
Shippensburg hosts No. 5 West Chester at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Robb Field.
