RECAP: Lacrosse drops home game to No. 5 West Chester

Weneta makes career-high 15 saves; Savarino records hat trick

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team came up short in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match against No. 5-ranked West Chester on Wednesday by a score of 20-6 at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (0-3, 0-2 PSAC East) remained close with West Chester (1-0, 1-0) through much of the first half because of excellent goaltending by freshman Ally Weneta. The score was 4-1 WCU with 10 minutes left in the first half, a juncture at which Weneta had already recorded eight saves.

The Golden Rams used an 8-1 run over the final 9:40 of the first half to gain a decisive advantage. Weneta made 11 saves in the first half and finished with a career-high 15 saves – marking the fourth time in her career she has recorded double-digit saves in a game.

Sophomore Gabby Savarino continued a string of spirited production against the Golden Rams, posting a hat trick in addition to four draw controls and a caused turnover. Savarino has scored seven goals in three career games against West Chester, including two of her five career hat tricks.

Sophomore Hannah Seifried finished with a goal, an assist, and team highs of three groundballs and six draw controls. Shippensburg finished with a 14-13 edge in draws, winning 8-of-11 controls to start the game. Senior Jessica DeMarte had three draw controls.

Senior Alana Cardaci and freshman Bailey Krahl each scored a goal in the second half. For Krahl, it was her first collegiate tally.

Senior Jena MacDonald had an assist on Cardaci's goal, extending her streak to five consecutive games with an assist dating back to last season.

Weneta's 15 saves are the most by a Raider keeper since redshirt-sophomore KiKi Brasher made 17 saves on April 17, 2018.

West Chester got seven goals from Tatum Altman, while Hannah Stanislawczyk had four goals and an assist. Captain Drew McKinney contributed a hat trick, an assist and five draw controls.

Shippensburg hosts Shepherd at 1 p.m. Saturday to conclude a season-opening four-game homestand. Before the game, the Raiders will recognize seniors Cardaci, DeMarte, Madi Jones, MacDonald, Maddy Rinker and Maddy Siejk in a pre-game ceremony.
