RECAP: No. 1 Field Hockey bests No. 5 Kutztown in OT, 2-1

Sluymer’s early goal and overtime goal secures the win

The Shippensburg University field hockey team went to overtime at No. 5 Kutztown on Saturday and posted a 2-1 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on a cloudy afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium.

Shippensburg (10-0, 5-0 PSAC) took the lead three minutes into the match with a tip-in goal by senior Jenna Sluymer that was entered from the right side by graduate Anna Gruber.

Kutztown (8-3, 2-2 PSAC) kept within one goal of the Raiders, and with 1:08 remaining, the Golden Bears scored and tied the game, forcing an overtime scenario.

Three minutes into overtime, Sluymer scored the golden goal off an assist by senior Jazmin Petrantonio.

Golden Bear goalkeeper Katie Dotterweich, the reigning PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week, had 13 saves. KU also had one defensive save. In the fourth quarter, the Golden Bears outshot the Raiders 7-3 and had a 6-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Raiders finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal. SU played down two players at various points due to green cards.

This is the third straight time that the two teams have gone to overtime at Kutztown.

Shippensburg will be back at Robb Sports Complex at 4 p.m. Tuesday for a conference matchup against Millersville.
