SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team put forth a spirited effort in its home opener Saturday but yielded an overtime goal to visiting No. 25 IUP in a 14-13 loss to the Crimson Hawks in front of a sizable crowd on a sunny day at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (1-1) nearly snapped a nine-game losing streak to IUP (1-0) and scored its most goals against the Crimson Hawks in eight years. Shots (32-32) and draws (14-14) were dead even in Saturday's game.
Â
SU raced out to a 4-1 lead at the 10-minute mark but was held scoreless for the remainder of the first half. A play that proved quite pivotal occurred just before halftime. The horn sounded to end the first half, but the officials deemed a foul had occurred just before the horn and put one second back on the clock. The Crimson Hawks converted a free position within that second to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Â
The Raiders scored five of the first seven goals of the second half to take a 9-8 lead. SU led 11-9 with nine minutes to go, but a 4-0 run put IUP up by two, 13-11, with 5:29 left. Undaunted, the Raiders rallied once again to even the score at 13-13. IUP goalkeeper Carly Mansur made a save with 37 seconds left that ultimately sent the game into overtime.
Â
Shippensburg thwarted IUP's initial scoring salvo in overtime, but a false start gave the ball back to the Crimson Hawks and resulted in a free-position golden goal by Chloe Borland.
