RECAP: Baseball Drops Sunday Game to No. 5 Catawba

Werkheiser finished with three hits and a run; Knotts hits two doubles

The Shippensburg University baseball team lost to No. 5 Catawba on Sunday by a 12-1 score in action at Newman Park.

Shippensburg (0-6) surrendered five runs in both the first inning and the fourth inning to Catawba (7-2), creating a deficit that proved insurmountable. The Raiders finished with eight hits on the day.
 
SU's lone run came in the second. Junior catcher Ben Werkheiser led off with a single and junior right fielder Scout Knotts followed with a double, putting two men in scoring position. Sophomore Lake Lloyd hit a sacrifice fly to plate Werkheiser.
 
Werkheiser was 3-for-4, while Knotts hit two doubles. Senior Zack Zoller was 2-for-3, and freshman Joe Barbera had a pinch-hit bunt single.
 
Five Raider pitchers took to the mound in the game, with redshirt-sophomore Kiernan Higgins earning the start. Redshirt-sophomore Matt Ryan was the first man out of the bullpen to relieve Higgins.
 
Sophomore Noah Nabholz threw 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and walking three. Freshman Chris Douglass pitched a scoreless seventh, including a strikeout of Jackson Raper for his first collegiate out – Raper finished the weekend 10-for-13 at the plate with four extra-base hits and seven RBIs. Sophomore Cole Falduts pitched a scoreless eighth for the Raiders.
 
Shippensburg returns to action next Saturday and Sunday with a four-game series against Queens (N.Y.) in Flemington, N.J. The Knights opened their season today against U-Sciences.
