RECAP: Women’s Basketball Uses Third-Quarter Run to Defeat Bloomsburg, 66-53

Green leads all players with 18 points; SU out-scored BU by 14 in second half

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team used an 11-2 run over the first 2:35 of the second half on Wednesday night to gain an eight-point lead and pull ahead of visiting Bloomsburg, defeating the Huskies 66-53 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (10-6, 7-3 PSAC) snapped a three-game losing streak against Bloomsburg (7-7, 4-6) by allowing its fewest points to an opponent this season. SU limited the Huskies to 35.4-percent shooting from the field and committed a season-low nine fouls, as the visitors did not make a free throw the entire night (0-for-4).

Sophomore Aunbrielle Green led all players with 18 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the field to complement five rebounds. Green was 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. It is the ninth time she has reached double figures in scoring this season.

Junior Ariel Jones scored 17 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the field including 2-of-5 from three-point range. She had three rebounds and two assists. Jones was 5-of-7 at the free-throw line, and has now made 531 career free throws. She is one free throw shy of tying Lauren Beckley's school record for career free throws (532), a total that ranks fourth all-time in PSAC history.

Junior Destiny Jefferson scored eight points, totaled a game-high seven assists, and grabbed two rebounds – playing all 40 minutes. Sophomore Lauren Mills scored nine points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field, and added three rebounds and two assists.

Junior Kryshell Gordy scored seven points and grabbed 16 rebounds – two short of her career high. It is the third time this season and the 21st time in her career she has recorded double-digit rebounds in a game. Sophomore Lauren Pettis added four points and five rebounds.

The Raiders nearly entered halftime with a four-point deficit, but a three-pointer by freshman Treasure George made it 29-28 in Bloomsburg's favor at the intermission. The third quarter began with Mills making her third three-pointer of the season to give SU the lead, and the Raiders would not trail the rest of the way.

Shippensburg led 39-31 with 7:45 left in the third quarter following its 11-2 run to open the second half. It led by 10 points at the end of the third quarter and by as many as 15 points down the stretch. SU shot 44 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Huskies by four (42-38).

Bloomsburg's starters scored just 32 points, while the bench scored 21 points. Bella Ricci led the Huskies with 13 of those 21 bench points, going 3-of-10 from three-point range. Meghan Corridoni had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Shippensburg travels to Seton Hill on Saturday for a 1 p.m. clash with the Griffins. Monitor the SU athletics website, www.shipraiders.com, in the event of any changes to the schedule due to weekend weather.
