The Shippensburg University women's basketball team put four players in double figures Sunday and used a key momentum-shifting run in the first half to ultimately defeat Seton Hill, 89-82, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover matchup from the McKenna Center.
Shippensburg (11-6, 8-3 PSAC) unleashed a 20-0 run that stretched from the 5:00 mark of the first quarter to the 9:45 mark of the second quarter, as the Raiders flipped an early 13-4 deficit into a 24-13 lead. The Raiders would not trail for the remainder of the contest despite the Griffins frequently getting within one possession of the lead down the stretch.
Junior
Destiny Jefferson led the Raiders with 23 points, shooting 11-of-17 from the field to go along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jefferson reached the 20-point mark in a game for the fourth time this season and the 18th time in her career – she also set a new career high with her 11 field goals.
Junior
Ariel Jones scored 22 points, recorded a season-high six assists, equaled a career high with three blocks, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals. Jones was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line and broke Lauren Beckley's school record (532) for career free throws in the process. She is now 539-of-666 (80.9 percent) for her career at the free-throw line, and ranks third in PSAC history for career made free throws.
Junior
Kryshell Gordy posted her first double-double of the season and the 10th of her career by with 16 points (7-of-11 shooting) and 16 rebounds. Gordy also blocked two shots. It's the second-straight game Gordy posted 16 rebounds, and the fourth time this season she has recorded double-digit rebounds in a game.
Sophomore
Lauren Mills equaled her season high with 16 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field. Mills equaled a season high with four assists and grabbed three rebounds. Her running jumper off the glass with 57 seconds left gave SU an 83-79 lead, and her block with 38 seconds left led to free throws that made it a three-possession game.
Sophomore
Aunbrielle Green finished with seven points and five rebounds.
SU shot 16-of-21 (76 percent) from the free-throw line, including 14-of-18 (78 percent) in the second half. The Raiders were also 3-of-4 from three-point range in the second half.
The two teams combined for 90 points in the paint – including 54 by Shippensburg (two short of the season high). SU also posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (19 assists, 18 turnovers) and scored 17 points off Griffin turnovers.
Seton Hill (12-4, 7-4) had four players reach double figures, including a game-high 28 points from Lexi Civittolo and a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) from Katie Nolan.
Shippensburg returns to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Kutztown from Heiges Field House.
