Izzy Weigel scored a goal in the 40th minute on Thursday to propel the Shippensburg University women's soccer team to 1-0 victory over visiting Pitt-Johnstown in the 2019 season opener from David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-0-0) converted late in the first half with Weigel slamming home a feed from junior
Casey Bell for her 16th career goal as a Raider. The play was setup by an excellent midfield service from junior defender
Kendall Mikkelsen.
SU won the possession battle in Thursday's match but Pitt-Johnstown (0-1-0) managed the edge in shots-on-goal, posting a 6-3 margin over the Raiders. Both teams earned two corner kicks.
Junior
Delaney Shifflett was strong in goal, making six saves to record her seventh career shutout.
Shippensburg is back in action Saturday with an evening match at Frostburg State.
