RECAP: Softball Drops Doubleheader at Shepherd, 2-0 and 4-0

Raiders held to just six hits on the day; Wilson and Johnson throw well

The Shippensburg University softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Shepherd on Tuesday, falling by scores of 2-0 and 4-0 on a pleasant afternoon at Sara Cree Field.

Shippensburg (19-15) managed just six hits on the day, all singles, but did achieve a rare feat by turning a 4-3-6 triple play in Game 2. It is the first triple play turned by the Raiders since Mar. 7, 2010, when pitcher Dana Ward caught a bunt that resulted in a triple play against No. 14 Saginaw Valley.

Senior Taryn Wilson threw a 76-pitch complete game in the opener, scattering two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two. Freshman Lacey Hunter singled in the sixth for SU's lone hit of Game 1.

In Game 2, freshman pitcher Hannah Johnson took over for Tressa Kagarise in the first inning and finished the game, allowing one earned run over 5.2 innnings. Johnson walked two and struck out three while allowing six hits.

Freshman Morgan Fetter was 2-for-3 in Game 2. Freshman Hannah Marsteller, junior Meghan Klee and freshman Morgan DeFeo each singled, while junior Kayla Bonawitz stole a base.

Shepherd (28-6) got a complete-game shutout in Game 1 from Lori Sturgill, who struck out eight. Taylor Stocks struck out five in four innings of work in Game 2 for the win, while Cheyenne Van Pelt got a save by scattering two hits and two walks in three shutout innings of relief.
