RECAP: Lacrosse Falls in Season Finale at Slippery Rock, 10-7

Hertz finishes in SU’s Top 2 in caused turnovers, groundballs and draw controls

The Shippensburg University lacrosse team dropped its season finale on Saturday, as the Raiders came up short in a 10-7 decision at Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Shippensburg (5-11, 3-9 PSAC) and Slippery Rock (7-9, 5-7) exchanged scoring runs all game long. The Raiders held a 3-0 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half, but The Rock countered with the next five to take a 5-3 lead with 20:19 to go. SU then scored four straight to take a 7-5 lead entering the final six minutes of play, but SRU responded with five goals in the final 5:30 to claim the victory.

Sophomore Alana Cardaci scored twice, to give her 53 goals for the season. Cardaci finishes with the most goals in a single season by an SU player since Kristin Crutchfield scored 53 goals in 2007.

Senior Madi Newman contributed a goal and an assist along with four of SU's 12 draw controls. Newman concluded her Raider tenure with 98 career points (59 goals, 39 assists).

Four other Raiders produced tallies, including freshman Hannah Seifried, junior Kami Holt, sophomore Maddy Siejk and freshman Gabby Savarino. Savarino added three caused turnovers, two draw controls and two groundballs.

Senior Valerie Hertz had a team-high four caused turnovers to complement three groundballs and two draw controls. Hertz completed her illustrious Raider career with 154 caused turnovers (school record), 227 career groundballs (second all-time at SU) and 180 career draw controls (second all-time at SU).

Defensively, sophomore Madi Jones and freshman Julia Leishear each finished with multiple caused turnovers. Ten of SU's 12 starters finished with multiple groundballs. Freshman Shaely Gamble made 10 saves.

The game marked the final collegiate contests for SU's seniors: Hertz, Rene Morrow, Newman, Kyra Shank and Morgan Stone.
