RECAP: Softball Achieves Key Regional Split at Lock Haven, Winning Game 2

SU drops Game 1, 3-2, before winning Game 2, 4-2

The Shippensburg University softball team achieved a key regional split at Lock Haven on Tuesday, winning Game 2 by a score of 4-2 after dropping Game 1, 3-2, on a pleasant afternoon at Lawrence Field.

Shippensburg (16-12) managed just three hits in Game 1 against Bekah Slattery, the two-time PSAC Central Division Pitcher of the Year. Lock Haven (14-12) plated three runs in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference, scoring one on a bases-loaded infield hit and two more on a bases-loaded single up the middle.

Sophomore Courtney Coy had two of the three hits off Slattery, including a solo home run and a leadoff double in the seventh inning. SU got the tying run into scoring position in the seventh after an RBI-double by freshman Grace Palmieri, but Slattery achieved her 11th and 12th strikeouts to conclude Game 1.

In Game 2, Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by freshman Hannah Johnson. In the third, Coy doubled home junior Kayla Bonawitz, and in the fourth, SU took a 4-0 lead on an RBI-single by freshman Lacey Hunter.

Senior Taryn Wilson threw every inning on the day for the Raiders, finishing with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings while allowing just five runs. She took a shutout into the seventh inning of Game 2, ultimately stranding two runners with her eighth and final strikeout of the nightcap.

Overall, Coy finished with three extra-base hits, while Hunter and Bonawitz each had two hits. Bonawitz reached base three times and stole three bases on the day. Freshman Morgan Fetter hit a double, and junior Meghan Klee walked twice and scored two runs.

Wilson was given a spot in the lineup in Game 2; she singled and scored a run.
