RECAP: Baseball Drops Non-Conference Road Twinbill at Shepherd, 12-7 and 12-3

Raiders get homers from Williamson and Knotts, finish doubleheader with 11 hits

The Shippensburg University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games Wednesday at Shepherd, falling 12-7 and 12-3 to the Rams in action at Fairfax Field.

Shippensburg (5-7) totaled 11 hits on the day. Sophomore Logan Williamson was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs scored in the opener. Junior Zack Zoller had a team-high three hits on the day.

In Game 1, the Raiders drew eight walks. Seniors Ty Painter and Tommy Baggett each got an RBI by walking with the bases loaded. Junior Jacob Pollock was 2-for-2 and drove in two runs, one with a sacrifice fly and another with an RBI-single. Baggett was 0-for-1 with three walks.

SU's runs in Game 2 came off a solo home run in the fifth by sophomore Scout Knotts, an RBI-single in the seventh by sophomore Chase Zurawski, and a sacrifice fly in the seventh from Zoller. Both Zurawski and Zoller had two hits in Game 2.

Senior Cole Backenstose and freshman Noah Nabholz were Shippensburg's starting pitchers in the doubleheader.

In relief, freshman Jared Showalter allowed just one solo home run and a walk in 3.1 innings in Game 1, striking out four. Junior Kyle Lysy threw three innings in Game 2, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.

Shepherd (8-7) used quick starts in both games to establish momentum. In Game 1, the Rams took a 9-1 lead after two innings after Christian Hamel, a 2018 All-Region First Teamer, hit a three-run home run and a grand slam in consecutive at-bats. In Game 2, the Rams led 6-0 after two.
