The Shippensburg University women's basketball team shot a season-high 58 percent Wednesday night, as all five starters posted double figures, sophomore
Ariel Jones scored a game-high 34 points, and three Raiders recorded double-doubles in an 88-63 road victory at East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup from Koehler Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (11-12, 7-8 PSAC) maintained a tie for third place in the East with West Chester but more importantly, moved 0.5 games ahead of Lock Haven, a full game ahead of Millersville (SU's next opponent) and 1.5 games ahead of East Stroudsburg (8-13, 5-9). The Top 6 teams from the division qualify for the PSAC Tournament at season's end.
Jones finished with 34 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 15-of-20 at the free-throw line, marking the ninth time this season she has made double-digit free throws in a game. She scored 21 of her 34 points in the second half. It was her ninth 30-point game of the season (14th of career), and the 19th time in 23 games this season she has exceeded 20 points.
Sophomore
Kryshell Gordy was impactful on both ends of the floor, scoring 10 points, grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds and totaling two assists and two steals. Gordy posted her fourth double-double of the season and grabbed double-digit rebounds for the eighth time this season.
Freshman
Aunbrielle Green scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half – including 12 in the third quarter – finishing the game 8-of-12 from the field to complement 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Green achieved her sixth double-double of the year and reached double digits in points for the 14th time.
Freshman
Lauren Pettis was consistently effective despite navigating through some foul trouble, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting in 23 minutes of action. It was Pettis's fifth double-double of the season, and the 12th time this season she has finished with at least three offensive rebounds.
Freshman
Lauren Mills tallied 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting to complement four rebounds and two assists. Mills posted double figures for the ninth time this season.
With her 32-point effort, Jones set a new single-season career high in points (606) and moved into seventh in school history. She becomes the third player in school history to post two 600-point seasons in a career, joining Tracy Spencer (school-record 670 in 95-96, 614 in 94-95) and Lauren Beckley (654 in 09-10, 624 in 07-08). Jones is the first Raider to post 600 points in each of her first two seasons.
Additionally, Jones has now made 210 free throws this season – nine shy of the SU single-season record held by Melissa Swartz (219 in 1995-96) and 13 shy of the PSAC single-season record held by Miki Glenn (223 in 2014-15).
Shippensburg scored 52 points in the paint to ESU's 24, and the Raiders finished with a 49-38 edge in rebounds. Intriguingly, East Stroudsburg won the offensive glass by a 23-12 margin – posting eight more offensive rebounds than defensive rebounds. Despite this disparity, SU finished with a 14-11 edge in second-chance points.
The third quarter was pivotal, as Shippensburg out-scored East Stroudsburg by a 31-15 margin. ESU cut it to 12 points with 6:02 remaining before the Raiders countered with a 10-0 to help clinch the victory.
The Raiders equaled a season high with eight blocks. Green and Jones recorded new career highs with three blocks each, while Mills and Pettis also blocked a shot.
